What are your basic rights when detained?

There are some important rights that you need to know when you are detained. The police have a duty to inform you about these rights.

It is important to know that you have the right to:

  • know the reasons for your detention and the charges against you
  • remain silent and not to provide information that may be used against you in court
  • invite a lawyer
  • inform your relatives, education institution or employer about your arrest

This section will explain what these rights really mean and when you have to be informed about them.
